The improved John Locke
Well, it’s been a while since my last post and I’ve finally decided who to blame it on.
Those bastards that cancelled Lost.
Let’s face it, the shows finale was lame. I would blow the hatch on my reasoning and dig deeper, but better minds than mine have written ad nauseum about the show and I have drinks to make, damn it!
The one character I’ve loved since the beginning is the insufferable John Locke. Maybe it’s his reticent adoption of faith that I found invigorating, or his fearless nature in the face of danger, but it’s probably just that I identify with another bald dude.
I wanted to create a drink that highlighted the distinct awesomeness of the new John Locke, AKA Smoke Monster Locke, AKA Smock, AKA Smokey, AKA Man in Locke…
(quick deviation, you know how in theĀ obituaries section of theĀ local paper everyone has multiple AKA’s attached to them? When I die I want the following AKA’s…
AKA “Pork Chop Express”
AKA “Captain Wykydtron”
AKA “That drunk white boy at the end of the bar singing Willy Wonka songs like Dio”
Thanks!)
Okay, so I figured I needed to take something traditional and give it an edge, just like the new Locke. And it had to have smoke involved.
So here’s what I did. I took about 2 liters of fresh Coconut water with some small bits of coconut flesh left in and smoked it over some molasses soaked hickory chips for about an hour. Next I took the smoked coconut water, divided it up in a few small circular containers and threw ‘em in the freezer.
Result: Smoked Coconut water Ice Cubes
Here’s what I made from it. Basically taking the recipe for a Daiquiri and moving it forward.
The Improved John Locke
AKA Smoked Daiquiri, AKA Smock of Faith
1 1/2 oz Cruzan Single Barrel Rum
1/2 oz Clement Creole Shrubb
1/2 oz fresh Lime juice
small squeeze of Demerrera syrup
2 dashes Bitter Rock Coconut Bitters (available soon, I swear!)
Combine over ice & shake hard, then strain into a rocks glass over a couple chunks of the Smoked Coconut Ice.
It turned out awesome! As you sip on the drink you can detect a light smokiness, then as the ice melts the smoke gets stronger and stronger, which is a pretty good analogy for the development of John Locke’s character this last season of Lost.
Some traditionalists might object to my defiling of the daiquiri, but I say to them… well, I think this guy says it best.
(if I could add sound to this post, right now would be that iconic end of Lost “Bong”… but I don’t know how it’s not technically possible so please just imagine it.)

I have been looking for coconut bitters for a while. Are you making and bottling your own? Are you selling it? Are there companies doing it? Is there a simple recipe? Anything helps.
Cheers
Dustin
I’m making and bottling my own. I sampled them out at Tales of the Cocktail last year and they received a great response.
I’m damn proud of ‘em.
Send me an email to stcroixlibationsociety@gmail.com and we’ll discuss how to get you a bottle.
Cheers!
